Peru is home to 70 percent of the world's tropical glaciers, and the Andean glaciers are the source of water for millions of people. The day is observed with ceremonies to honor the water (the Andean people consider water a sacred gift from the apus, the mountain spirits), and the reminder that the glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. The day is both celebration and warning, and the tradition is to perform a pago a la tierra (payment to the earth) near the springs and the rivers.

Dia del Autum Equinoccio

The autumn equinox is celebrated at Machu Picchu, where the Intihuatana stone (the "hitching post of the sun") casts no shadow at noon on the equinox. The Intihuatana is one of the most important artifacts in Machu Picchu, and the Inca astronomers used it to predict the seasons, plan the agricultural calendar, and honor the sun god Inti. The equinox is celebrated with a ceremony that includes offerings of coca leaves, flowers, and chicha (corn beer).
