The Holy Week is the most important religious festival in Peru, and it is celebrated with processions, masses, and the tradition of visiting seven churches on Maundy Thursday. The most spectacular Holy Week is in Ayacucho, where the processions include the carrying of the virgins (the images of the Virgin Mary are carried through the streets on enormous platforms), and the tradition is to carpet the streets with flower petals and sawdust (the alfombras, or carpets, are works of art that are destroyed by the procession). . 2026: Mar 29-Apr 4. 2027: Mar 21-27.
