Mawsim al-Brik

Brik is the quintessential Libyan appetizer: a thin, crispy pastry (warqa) filled with egg, tuna, parsley, and sometimes capers, then deep-fried until golden. The brik is served during Ramadan, at weddings, and at every important gathering. The skill is in the folding (the brik is folded into a triangle) and the frying (the pastry must be crispy and the egg must be runny). In Tripoli, the brik sellers are in the medina, and the best brik is made to order. The Tunisian version (brik) is well known, but the Libyan version is distinct: larger, more filling, and often served with a squeeze of lemon. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Mawsim al-Ghuran

The Quran recitation season in Libya reaches its peak during Ramadan, when the mosques hold tarawih prayers and the reciters complete the entire Quran in 30 days. The Libyan tradition of Quran recitation is unique: the reciters use a melodic style called "maqam al-Libi," which is distinct from the Egyptian, Syrian, and Saudi styles. The best reciters are celebrities in Libya, and their recordings are played in homes, taxis, and shops throughout the month. The season concludes with the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr), the holiest night of the year. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.
