Youm al-Thawra

The anniversary of the 2011 revolution that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. The revolution began on February 17, 2011, in Benghazi, and it spread across the country in a matter of days. The day is observed with ceremonies, the flying of the new flag, and the remembrance of the martyrs. The revolution is still recent, and the memory is still raw. The day is both celebration and mourning, because the revolution that toppled a dictator also unleashed a civil war that continues to this day.
