Columbus Day

In 1492, Columbus arrived in the Bahamas. In 1937, it became a federal holiday. In recent years, many cities and states have renamed it Indigenous Peoples' Day, because the people who were already here when Columbus arrived did not need to be discovered. In South Dakota, it has been Native American Day since 1990. In Berkeley, it has been Indigenous Peoples' Day since 1992. The holiday is changing, which is what holidays do when the country changes.
