The anniversary of the declaration of Romanian as the official language of Moldova on August 31, 1989. The day is observed with cultural events, music, and the reminder that the Moldovan language is Romanian, and the Romanian flag (blue, yellow, and red) is flown alongside the Moldovan flag. The day is both celebration and protest, because the language issue is still controversial: the pro-Russian parties insist that Moldovan is a separate language, while the pro-European parties insist that Moldovan is Romanian. The tradition is to recite the poetry of Mihai Eminescu, to sing Romanian folk songs, and to march through the center of Chisinau with both flags.
