Regional/Cultural Day
Jum ta' Haddiem
The trade unions march in Valletta, and the demands include a higher minimum wage (about 800 euros per month), an end to the exploitation of migrant workers, and the protection of workers' rights. The march is both celebration and protest, and the signs are in Maltese and English. The General Workers' Union (GWU) is the largest union in Malta, and the May 1 march traditionally ends at the GWU headquarters in Valletta, where the union leaders give speeches and the bands play. The day is also a celebration of the Maltese worker, and the tradition is to eat pastizzi (the flaky pastry filled with ricotta or peas that is the national snack of Malta).
