National holiday. A significant day for Burkina's Catholic community. Churches fill, choirs sing, and afterward everyone gathers for a meal that always includes riz gras. The faith runs deep in the Centre-Ouest and the processions through Koudougou and Ouaga are a sight that stays with you.
The most important day in Liechtenstein, and the only day when the entire country celebrates together. The National Day was established in 1940, and it is held on August 15th because it combines the feast of the Assumption (a Catholic holiday) and the birthday of Prince Franz Josef II (born August 16, 1906). The celebration begins with a solemn church service at the Pfarrkirche in Vaduz, followed by a ceremony on the castle grounds of Schloss Vaduz, where the Prince gives a speech to the nation. In the afternoon, there is a folk festival with traditional music, dancing, and food : fondue, raclette, Käsknöpfle (cheese dumplings), and local wine. In the evening, a bonfire is lit on the Gaflei (a mountain above Vaduz), and fireworks illuminate the castle and the valley. The entire country (38,000 people) can fit into the town square below the castle. The National Day is also the occasion for the triple crown: the three crowns of Liechtenstein, Vaduz, and Schellenberg : the two historical counties that were united in 1719 to form the Principality of Liechtenstein : are displayed on the national flag and on the castle gates.
After the official ceremony, the Prince and Princess open Schloss Vaduz to the public, and citizens can tour the castle, meet the royal family, and drink to the nation. The castle is the residence of the Prince, and it is normally closed to the public : National Day is one of the few days when the gates are open. Schloss Vaduz sits on a rocky outcrop above the capital, visible from everywhere in the valley. The castle dates back to the 12th century, though it was extensively renovated in the 20th century. The view from the castle terraces : the Rhine Valley, the Swiss Alps to the west, the Vorarlberg mountains to the east : is the best in the country, and on National Day, it belongs to everyone.
