The Julian New Year, still celebrated in Kakheti and eastern Georgia. Masked performers called berikas go house to house in animal skins with bells on their belts, dancing, blessing, and collecting food. The masks are ancient and terrifying. The blessings are sincere. The food collected feeds the whole village by morning. The berikas do not remove their masks until the ceremony ends.
