Eid al-Nahda
The anniversary of the 1970 coup that brought Sultan Qaboos to power and began the Omani Renaissance. Before 1970, Oman had three schools, ten kilometres of paved roads, and one hospital. Disease was rampant, slavery was still practiced, and the country was closed to the outside world. Sultan Qaboos, educated at Sandhurst, overthrew his father and within five decades transformed Oman into a modern state with universal education, free healthcare, and a GDP per capita of over $25,000. The day is observed with ceremonies, military parades, and the telling of personal Renaissance stories : every Omani family has one.
