Not an official holiday, but try finding someone at work. The country gathers at the coast to watch the Valparaiso fireworks, eats twelve grapes at midnight for twelve wishes, and toasts with champagne. The Valparaiso show is three kilometers of fireworks over the bay and it is spectacular. The grapes are mandatory.
The fireworks over Sydney Harbour are watched by a billion people worldwide and by a hundred thousand people standing in the Domain with warm champagne and sore feet. The countdown is shouted. The new year is greeted with the phrase "Bonne année!" and the fireworks are spectacular. The yachts in the harbor provide the foreground, and the Casino de Monte-Carlo provides the backdrop. The Hôtel de Paris, the grandest hotel in Monaco (and one of the grandest in the world), hosts a Réveillon dinner that costs over 1,000 euros per person, and the champagne is served in Jeroboam bottles. At midnight, the entire principality : from Le Rocher to Fontvieille, from Monte Carlo to La Condamine : erupts in cheers, and the fireworks light up the Mediterranean sky.
