Guelaguetza

The Guelaguetza is the most important cultural festival in Oaxaca, and it is celebrated on the two Mondays after July 16th. The festival includes dances from the seven regions of Oaxaca, and the dancers wear traditional costumes and carry offerings of food, flowers, and crafts. The word "Guelaguetza" means "offering" in Zapotec, and the festival is a celebration of the diversity of Oaxaca's indigenous cultures. The most popular dances are the Danza de la Pluma (Feather Dance), the Danza de los Diablos (Dance of the Devils), and the Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Old Men). The festival is held in the auditorium on the Cerro del Fortin, and the tickets sell out months in advance.
