Divali

The festival of lights is celebrated by Mauritius's Hindu community (52% of the population), and it is one of the most colorful festivals in Mauritius. The celebration includes the lighting of oil lamps (diyas), the creation of rangoli (colored patterns on the floor), the wearing of new clothes, and the sharing of sweets. The diyas are placed on every windowsill, doorstep, and balcony, and the entire island is lit up. The Divali is not just a Hindu festival. It is a national festival, and the celebration is shared by all communities. The tradition is to visit your neighbors (regardless of their religion) and share sweets. The traditional sweets include gulab jamun, barfi, and ladoo. . 2026: Oct 19. 2027: Nov 7.
