Berlin Philharmoniker Waldbuehne Konzert

The Berliner Philharmoniker plays an outdoor concert at the Waldbuehne. The program is lighter than the regular season. The audience brings picnics. The acoustics are remarkable. The setting is a forest amphitheater built by the Nazis and reclaimed by culture. The music floats through the trees. The Sekt is chilled. The mosquitoes are present.

Erdbeerwochen

Seasonal. German Erdbeeren are small, red through to the center, and taste like strawberries are supposed to taste. Roadside stands sell them by the Korb. Every family buys one basket for eating and one for Erdbeerkuchen, strawberry cake with vanilla cream. The season ends in August. The memory sustains through winter.

Erste Freibad Tag

Proposed. The Freibad opens. The water is 19 degrees. The air is 22 degrees. The children do not care. The children jump in. The adults sit on the edge and dip a toe. The Liegestuhl, the deck chair, is claimed by 9 AM. The Liegestuhl position is strategic: close enough to the pool to watch the children, far enough from the grass to avoid ants. The Freibad is not luxurious. The Freibad is functional. The Freibad is German summer in a rectangular concrete package with chlorinated water and a Wurst grill.

Kirschwochen

Seasonal. When the cherries arrive at the Markt, every German bakery switches to Kirschkuchen and every German grandmother makes Kirschgroetze, cherry compote with vanilla sauce. The season is short. The cherries are gone in three weeks. The memory of Kirschgroetze lasts until next June.

Sommerfest Eroeffnung

Across Germany, the Sommerfests begin. Every Schrebergarten colony, every Verein, every Feuerwehr hosts a Sommerfest with beer, Bratwurst, and a band playing Schlager and Volksmusik. The tent is borrowed. The beer is from a local brewery. The potato salad is made by someone's mother. The Sommerfest is not Oktoberfest. It is better because nobody has heard of it.

Spargelmitalles Tag

Proposed. The height of Spargel season. White asparagus, peeled with a special peeler, served with Hollandaise, Schinken, and Kartoffeln. Every restaurant offers a Spargelkarte. Every German who claims to be tired of Spargel still orders it. The Spargel season ends on Johannistag, June 24, and the collective relief is palpable. Until next April.
