Ruz el Casbah

The UNESCO-listed maze of Algiers, Ottoman beauty and resistance stronghold stacked on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean. The Casbah is where Algeria kept its soul through 132 years of occupation. The narrow passages that once hid FLN fighters from French soldiers still wind between Ottoman palaces, hammams, and mosques. The Casbah of Algiers was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, recognizing its architecture, its urban fabric, and its role as the nerve center of the Battle of Algiers. During the revolution, the Casbah was the fortress. Women carried weapons under their haiks. Men moved through passages the French could not map. The Casbah won the war from inside its walls, and the walls are still standing, some barely, but standing.
