The anniversary of the 1903 Ilinden Uprising, when the Macedonian revolutionaries rose up against the Ottoman Empire and declared the Kruševo Republic (the first republic in the Balkans). The Kruševo Republic lasted only 10 days, but it is the founding myth of the Macedonian nation. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Ilinden Monument in Kruševo, and the reminder that the Macedonian identity was forged in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. The monument, designed by Jordan Grabul and Iskra Grabuloska, is a brutalist masterpiece that resembles a flower blooming from the hilltop.
