You dig to the back of your freezer in Vilnius and find a bag of berries from last July, a brick of cepelinai dough, and a mystery container that smells like dill. You decide today is the day to eat the berries, so you make a kompot and let the summer come back. A freezer is a time machine, and you're the archaeologist who gets to decide what to unearth.
The freezer at the bottom of the fridge has been holding that package of cepelinai since last winter, and you've been meaning to find out what's underneath it. You pull everything out, and there's a bag of berries from the summer before, and a lump of something that might be pork, and you can't remember when you put it there. You decide to cook it all tonight, because the past is just a meal you haven't had yet.
The shop on the corner of Gedimino has a sign that was painted by hand decades ago, the letters slightly crooked, the colors faded but still cheerful. It says 'Bakery' in a font that no one would use now, and the owner still opens at six, and the sign has never been replaced. You pass it every morning, and it makes you feel like the city has layers, and you're only seeing the top one.
