The anniversary of the 1987 Unity Accord between ZANU and ZAPU, which ended the Gukurahundi : the civil conflict in Matabeleland that killed an estimated 20,000 Ndebele civilians. The accord brought peace, but the wounds are still raw. In Matabeleland, Unity Day is observed with the same ambivalence that Americans feel about holidays celebrating reconciliation without fully acknowledging the wrong. The official ceremonies say "unity." The unofficial conversations say "never again."
