The anniversary of the 1973 October War (also known as the Yom Kippur War), when Syria and Egypt attacked Israel in an attempt to reclaim the territories lost in 1967. The day is observed with ceremonies and the reminder that the war was both a military defeat and a moral victory : Syria regained a sliver of the Golan Heights, but most of the territory remains under Israeli occupation. In Damascus, the day is marked by a military parade and the laying of wreaths at the Unknown Soldier monument.
