Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year is observed quietly in Qatar, marking the migration (hijra) of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. It is a day of reflection rather than celebration. The Ministry of Awqaf organizes lectures on the significance of the hijra, and mosques hold special prayers. Schools teach children about the Islamic calendar, which is lunar and 10-12 days shorter than the Gregorian year. The day is a public holiday, and most businesses are closed. . 2026: Jun 17. 2027: Jun 6.
