A celebration of the tamborito, Panama's national dance and musical form. The tamborito is performed by a couple dancing in a small circle of spectators who clap and sing the chorus. The lyrics are often improvised and can be romantic, humorous, or patriotic. The dance originated in the Azuero Peninsula and is accompanied by the caja, a wooden drum, and the mejorana, a small five-string guitar. The tamborito is considered the soul of Panamanian folk music and is performed at every important occasion from national holidays to village festivals.
