Bisket Jatra Season

The Bisket Jatra is the new year festival of Bhaktapur, one of the most dramatic and physically intense festivals in Nepal. The festival begins with the pulling of a massive wooden chariot through the narrow streets of Bhaktapur, and the highlight is the raising of a lingo (a ceremonial pole) that is pulled down in a contest between the eastern and western halves of the city. The pole represents the serpent that was slain by the hero, and its fall symbolizes the victory over death. The Bisket Jatra is also celebrated in Thimi and Bode, where devotees pull chariots and engage in tongue-piercing rituals. The festival is wild, chaotic, and deeply rooted in the agricultural and mythological traditions of the Newar people. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.

Sherpa Season

The Sherpa people of the Solu-Khumbu region are the most famous ethnic group in Nepal, known worldwide for their mountaineering skill and their role as guides and porters on Everest expeditions. The Sherpa are Tibetan Buddhists who migrated from Tibet to Nepal in the 15th and 16th centuries, and their name means "easterner" in Tibetan. The Sherpa practice a combination of Buddhism and animist beliefs, and the Solu-Khumbu is filled with monasteries (gompas), prayer flags, mani stones, and chortens (stupas). The Sherpa economy has been transformed by mountaineering and trekking, and the village of Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest, has become a prosperous town with bakeries, internet cafes, and gear shops.
