Tamu Losar Season

Tamu Losar is the new year of the Gurung community, one of the largest ethnic groups in Nepal and a major source of Gurkha recruits. The Gurung are concentrated in the hills of Lamjung, Kaski, and Mustang, and their new year is celebrated with traditional dance (the sorathi and the ghantu), feasting, and the drinking of tongba (millet beer). The Gurung are animist Buddhists, and their religion incorporates shamanistic practices alongside Buddhist rituals. The Gurung women wear traditional velvet tops and heavy silver jewelry, and the men wear the bhangra (a white cloth wrapped around the waist). The Tamu Losar is celebrated on December 15, and it is a public holiday in Nepal. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
