Onafhanklikheidsdag

The anniversary of Namibia's independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990. The celebration includes a military parade, the president's address, and the flying of the Namibian flag with its red, white, blue, green, and yellow sun. The flag was designed to symbolize the blood of the heroes (red), peace and unity (white), the sky and the Atlantic Ocean (blue), vegetation and agricultural resources (green), and the desert and warmth of the sun (yellow). The day is both celebration and reflection, because independence was achieved through armed struggle, and the South African occupation was brutal.
