Stagun tal-Pastizzi

The pastizz is the national snack of Malta, and it is a flaky pastry filled with ricotta cheese (pastizzi tal-irkotta) or mushy peas (pastizzi tal-pizelli). The pastizz is sold at pastizzerias on every street corner, and the price is about 50 cents (the cheapest snack in Malta). The pastizz is eaten for breakfast, lunch, and as a snack, and it is the Maltese equivalent of the croissant, the samosa, and the empanada. The pastizzeria is the social center of the village, and the morning pastizz with a cup of tea is a Maltese ritual. The pastizz is made with a dough that is folded and refolded to create thin, flaky layers, and the technique is similar to the phyllo dough of the Middle East. The pastizz is a reminder that the Maltese cuisine is a fusion of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, and that the Maltese language (which is Semitic but written in Latin script) reflects the same fusion. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.
