World Reef Day in the Maldives is marked by reef-monitoring dives, coral frame planting at resort nurseries, and educational programs about the 1998, 2016, and 2020 bleaching events that killed vast swaths of Maldivian coral. The reef is also the natural breakwater that protects the islands from wave erosion : without living coral, the islands erode faster than they can be replenished. The day is a reminder that the Maldives' existence depends on a thin layer of living coral polyps, each no bigger than a pinhead, that build the reef faster than the ocean can destroy it : or at least, that used to be the case.
