Navidad

The Malagasy Christmas is a church day and a family day. The church service is at midnight on the 24th, and the singing is in Malagasy. The Christmas meal includes vary (rice), hen'omby (beef), akoho sy voanio (chicken with coconut), and the French-influenced gateau (cake). The children receive gifts (usually clothes and school supplies), and the adults exchange visits. The Christmas is not about presents. It is about presence, and the tradition is to visit every relative you have on Christmas Day. The Malagasy Christmas is also a time for the joro (prayer ceremony), and the ancestors are included in the Christmas celebration because the Malagasy do not separate the living from the dead.
