Un día que conmemora la resistencia libia a la colonización italiana (1911-1947), una de las luchas anticoloniales más feroces y largas de África. La resistencia fue liderada por Omar Mukhtar (el "León del Desierto"), un maestro senusi que organizó la campaña de guerrillas contra el ejército italiano durante más de 20 años. Omar Mukhtar fue capturado y ahorcado en 1931, y sus últimas palabras ("De Dios venimos y a Dios volvemos") se convirtieron en un grito de guerra. The number of martyrs is estimated at 10,000 to 25,000, and every Libyan family knows someone who died in the revolution.
