The opening of the dhow sailing season, when the winds shift and the traditional wooden boats take to the water. Before oil, Kuwait was a maritime nation, and the dhow was the vessel of trade, travel, and pearl diving. The dhows were built in Kuwaiti shipyards (the most famous was in Sharq), and the shipwrights (qallalif) were among the most skilled craftsmen in the Gulf. The dhows sailed to India (the boom), to East Africa (the sambuk), and to Iraq (the jalibut), carrying dates, pearls, and spices. The dhow festival in Kuwait Bay, held in November, is a celebration of this heritage, with races, exhibitions, and the launch of newly built dhows that are exact replicas of the original vessels.
