Navidad — World Calendar Day
World Calendar Day

Navidad

Navidad

National holiday. The day after Nochebuena when everyone eats leftovers and recovers. Children play with toys, adults sleep, and the house smells like picana for three more days. This is the quietest day in Bolivia and it is earned.

Noel

National holiday. Catholic families attend morning mass, Muslim families visit neighbors, and everyone eats. The riz gras is extra rich, the chicken is extra big, and the children are extra happy. Burkina celebrates together regardless of faith because a holiday is a holiday and food is food.

Kenyan Christmas is a family reunion. The urban migrants return to their rural homes, the matatus (minibuses) are packed, and the roads are jammed. The Christmas service is at midnight on the 24th, and the singing is joyful and loud. The Christmas meal is nyama choma (goat or beef), chapati, pilau (spiced rice), and mandazi (fried dough). The goat is bought live, slaughtered on site, and roasted over charcoal. The process takes all day, and the result is worth every hour.
