The Jordanian Armed Forces are the backbone of the state, and Armed Forces Day is observed with military parades and the display of Jordan's military capabilities. The Jordanian military is one of the most professional in the region, and the day is a source of national pride. The Special Operations Forces (SOU) are among the best in the world, and King Abdullah II is a qualified pilot, diver, and parachutist.

The anniversary of the 1916 Arab Revolt, when Sharif Hussein bin Ali of Mecca launched the revolt against the Ottoman Empire with the support of the British. The Great Arab Revolt is the founding myth of the Hashemite kingdom, and the day is celebrated with military parades and the flying of the Arab Revolt flag (black, white, green, and red). The flag of the Arab Revolt is the basis of the flags of Jordan, Palestine, and Syria.
