Monrovia-Gründungstag — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Monrovia-Gründungstag

An informal observance of the founding of Monrovia, which was established in 1822 by the American Colonization Society and named after President James Monroe. The city is built on a peninsula between the Mesurado River and the Atlantic Ocean, and the original settlement was on Providence Island. Monrovia is the largest city in Liberia, with a population of over 1 million, and it is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. The city has survived the civil war, the Ebola epidemic, and decades of neglect, and it is slowly being rebuilt. The day is observed with walks through the historic neighborhoods of Monrovia, including Waterside, Sinkor, and Mamba Point.
