Hyperinflation Anniversary
In November 2008, Zimbabwe's inflation rate hit 79.6 billion percent. The government kept adding zeros to the currency until a single note was worth 100 trillion Zimbabwean dollars, which could not buy a loaf of bread. People carried suitcases of cash to buy groceries. The ATM withdrawal limit was meaningless because by the time you reached the ATM, the money had lost value. Prices changed between morning and afternoon. Workers were paid in the morning and ran to spend the money before lunch, because by dinner it was worthless. The experience scarred an entire generation, and every Zimbabwean over 30 has a hyperinflation story that sounds like dark comedy but was lived as tragedy.
