National Clean-Up Day

The first Friday of September, Zimbabweans pick up litter, plant trees, and clean their neighborhoods. The tradition was started by the government, but communities have made it their own. In Harare, entire streets turn out with brooms and bags. In rural areas, the focus is on water sources and communal paths. The day after, the streets are clean for approximately 24 hours, and then reality returns. But for one day, the city looks the way it should.
