Easter Weekend

In Zimbabwe, Easter means travel. Every city family that can afford transport heads to kumusha, and every bus terminus becomes a refugee camp of luggage and children. The ZIC (Zimbabwe International Church) conventions draw tens of thousands to open-air fields where choirs sing until dawn and sermons last longer than the Old Testament. If you stay in Harare over Easter, the city is eerily quiet and the churches are absolutely packed. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.

Good Friday

No meat on Good Friday. Zimbabweans who normally eat sadza with chicken or beef make do with muriwo (leafy greens) and peanut butter, or fish if they live near a river. The apostolic churches hold open-air services that last six hours, children are reminded this is a solemn day approximately every ten minutes, and somehow the sadza with muriwo tastes better than it does on any other Friday. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.
