Born in 1783, El Libertador liberated six countries from Spain : Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia (named after him), and Panama. He is everywhere in Venezuela: every city has a Plaza Bolivar, every town has a statue, and every political faction claims his legacy. Bolivar himself wrote, "I have plowed the sea," acknowledging the impossibility of his own dream. A country named its currency after him. That currency is now worthless. The tragedy writes itself.
