Batalla de Carabobo
The 1821 battle where Simon Bolivar's forces crushed the Spanish royalists and effectively secured Venezuelan independence. Every schoolchild visits the Campo de Carabobo monument at least once, stands in the blazing heat, and tries to imagine a battle fought on these flat, sunbaked plains. The military parade is held here annually, and the president always gives a speech. Some years the speech is longer than the battle was.

Dia de San Juan
The drums start at dawn and don't stop. In Barlovento, the Afro-Venezuelan heartland, the tambor de San Juan is a 400-year-old tradition that mixes Catholic saints with African rhythms so potent they make your chest vibrate. The drums are made from hollowed tree trunks and goat skin, and they're played with bare hands that bleed by midnight and keep playing anyway. This is not a performance. It is a possession : of the music, by the people, for the ancestors.
