The winter solstice bonfire night. In a country of Italian and Spanish heritage, families gather around backyard fires, eat torta frita (fried dough) dusted with sugar, and drink grappamiel : a viciously strong mix of grape brandy and honey that tastes gentle and hits like a freight train. The bonfire is supposed to ward off winter evil. The grappamiel ensures no one feels the cold.
