Uruguay renamed Columbus Day to acknowledge indigenous heritage, though the country's relationship with its Charrúa past is complicated : the last Charrúa were mostly exterminated in the 1830s by the same government that now commemorates them. The day includes ceremonies at the Charrúa monument in Montevideo and a growing movement to teach the Charrúa language, which currently has no fluent speakers.
