La Marcha del Silencio
Every May 20, thousands walk in silence through Montevideo to remember the disappeared of the dictatorship (1973-1985). The march ends at the Monument to the Detained-Disappeared in the Ciudad Vieja, where names are read aloud. There is no music. There are no speeches. There is only the sound of footsteps and the names. In a country of 3.5 million people, the disappeared are not statistics. They are neighbors, classmates, and family. The silence is louder than any drum.
