Carnaval Montevideano

The longest carnival in the world : 40 days of it. While Rio builds floats and throws beads, Montevideo builds murgas: satirical theater groups in harlequin makeup that roast politicians, sing about poverty, and make the entire country laugh and think at the same time. The audience knows every chorus by heart and sings along. If you think carnival is just dancing, you have never heard a murga destroy a president in four-part harmony. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Desfile de Escuelas

Before the main carnival, schoolchildren spend months rehearsing carnival routines : drumming, dancing, and flag-twirling : and parade through the Rambla in costumes their mothers stayed up until 3 AM finishing. Every parent films on their phone. Every child is exhausted. The pride is genuine and enormous. This is where candombe starts: in the schools, with the children, before anyone is old enough to understand that these drums were once forbidden. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Desfile de Llamadas

The crown jewel of Uruguayan Carnaval. Cuerdas de tambores : drum troupes of 30 to 150 players : march through Barrio Sur and Palermo playing candombe rhythms that are 200 years old. The three drums : chico, repique, and piano : weave polyrhythms that make your sternum vibrate. The dancers move in a walk called the paso de candombe, which looks like walking but is actually floating. The whole thing is UNESCO-recognized, and for good reason: this is the sound of Africa alive in South America. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Espectáculo de Murga

Murga is what happens when street theater, barbershop quartet, and political satire have a baby and raise it on a diet of drums and rage. A murga group wears painted faces, not masks : the difference matters : and performs 45-minute sets with themes like "the economy is a disaster," "politicians are liars," and "we are all going to die but at least the music is good." The percussion is three bass drums and two cymbals. The harmonies are four-part. The lyrics rhyme everything with everything, including words that should not rhyme. A good murga makes you laugh until you cry and then realize you were crying about something real. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Murgas Contest

Every night during Carnaval season, murga groups compete at the Teatro de Verano, an open-air amphitheater on the Rambla. A murga is 13 to 17 singers in elaborate costumes performing 45-minute satirical operettas. They mock the government, the economy, the national soccer team, and every sacred cow in Uruguayan life. The winner gets a trophy and bragging rights for a year. The real prize, though, is hearing 10,000 people sing your chorus back at you. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Animals of Tuvalu Day

You observe vast colonies of sooty terns, frigatebirds, and sea turtles nesting on these remote Pacific atolls. You notice that pet ownership is minimal due to isolation, though some residents keep chickens and occasional cats. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
