On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment was ratified, ending Prohibition. In America, Prohibition lasted 13 years, during which the country outlawed alcohol and then discovered that outlawing alcohol did not stop people from drinking. It just stopped them from drinking legally. Organized crime boomed. The government poisoned industrial alcohol, killing an estimated 10,000 people. When Prohibition ended, the country breathed a sigh of relief and ordered a drink.
