Nalukataq

Barrow (Utqiagvik), Alaska. An Indigenous Inupiaq celebration following the spring whaling season. The signature event is the blanket toss, where participants are launched high into the air using a sealskin blanket held by dozens of people. The higher you go, the more whales you will catch next season. The AHA! moment: this tradition has been practiced for over 1,000 years, long before Alaska was part of America, long before America existed.

A heartwarming portrait of a mother with her two daughters in matching red dresses, smiling joyfully.
Regional/Cultural Day

Smile Power Day

A day for smiling at strangers. In the Midwest, this is redundant. In New York City, this is terrifying.
