Regional/Cultural Day
Loving Day
On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court struck down laws banning interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia. Mildred and Richard Loving, a Black woman and a white man, had been sentenced to a year in prison for being married. The Court said no. Loving Day celebrations are held in cities across the country. It is both a celebration and a reminder that the right to marry who you love was not always guaranteed.
