Poinsettia Day

The poinsettia is native to Mexico. It was brought to the United States by Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first US minister to Mexico, in 1825. Poinsett was a diplomat, a physician, and a botanist. He also founded the Smithsonian Institution. The poinsettia is now the best-selling potted plant in America, with over 70 million sold each year. Every one of them is purchased between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
