Kwanzaa Begins

Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Black Studies at California State University. Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of African American culture and community, from December 26th to January 1st. The seven principles (Nguzo Saba) are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Each day, a candle is lit on the kinara. The holiday is not religious. It is cultural. It is observed by millions of African Americans alongside Christmas, not instead of it.
