In Rhode Island, this is still a state holiday, the only state that still observes it. On September 2, 1945, Japan surrendered, ending World War II. In Times Square, a sailor kissed a nurse in a photograph that became one of the most famous images of the 20th century. In Rhode Island, they celebrate with a parade in Narragansett. The rest of the country has moved on. Rhode Island has not.
