The Council estimates Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs per year. Chicago dogs have mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, a pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt on a poppy seed bun. They do NOT have ketchup. If you put ketchup on a Chicago dog, the city will exile you. New York dogs have mustard and sauerkraut. Detroit dogs are served in a bun with chili and mustard. Arizona dogs are wrapped in bacon. There is no national agreement on what belongs on a hot dog, but there is absolute certainty that whatever you put on yours is wrong.
