Fourth of July Fireworks Tradition

In small towns across America, the fireworks are set off by the volunteer fire department over the high school football field. The Rotary Club sells hot dogs. The VFW sells flags. The fireworks last 20 minutes and cost more than the town's road budget. In big cities, the fireworks are choreographed to music and cost millions. In both cases, the crowd goes "ooh" and "aah" at the same time. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Every July 4th at Coney Island, competitive eaters consume an astonishing number of hot dogs in 10 minutes. Joey Chestnut once ate 76 hot dogs. The event is broadcast on ESPN, which once stood for sports and now stands for "eating sausages on television while a man in a referee shirt holds a stopwatch." This is America.
