Dia del Trabajo

National holiday. Workers march through the streets, unions gather, and the speeches echo off the mountains in La Paz. In Bolivia, labor rights are personal because nearly everyone has a family member who works in the mines, the fields, or the informal economy that keeps this country breathing.

Fete du Travail

National holiday. Workers march, unions speak, and the streets fill with banners. But the real celebration is the shared meals that follow, because in Burkina every gathering ends with food and every holiday ends with to and dgounda on a shared plate.

Lei Day

In Hawaii, this is the one day when everyone wears a lei. Not a plastic lei from a tourist shop. A real lei, made with ti leaf, plumeria, orchid, or maile. There are rules about leis: you never refuse a lei, you never take it off in front of the person who gave it to you, and you never throw it in the trash. You set it on the ground, or better, return it to the ocean or hang it on a tree. A lei is not jewelry. It is a hug you can wear.

May Day

In Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day, celebrated with lei-making competitions, hula performances, and the crowning of the Lei Day queen. On the mainland, May Day has been co-opted by labor movements, but in Hawaii, it is still about flowers around your neck. In small towns across America, children still leave baskets of flowers on doorknobs, ring the bell, and run. Most of these children learned this from a parent who learned it from a parent. Nobody remembers who started it.
